A couple of months ago I was gifted a mini travel art kit from a close friend of mine. The set included a mini sketch book & a mini watercolour palette (which is the cutest thing ever!) The kit is so tiny it fits perfectly in all my purses, so the set has now gained the nickname “Tiny Traveller” as it is my go to art kit when I am out and about.
I have always been a fan of travel-sized watercolour kits, but none ever as small and convenient as this little guy! <3
When I got my new palette, I couldn’t wait to pick out my colours & fill it up! However, this quickly become more difficult as I remembered I am terrible at making decisions. I have collected quite the collection of watercolours – many brands and colours to choose from. I settled on a variety from Winsor and Newton as I had the most options to choose from.
I wanted to create a balanced palette, with good colours to mix with but also look good on their own. I settled for: Titanium white (Gouache), Naples Yellow, Cadmium Red, Hookers Green, French Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Perylene Violet, and my all time favourite pigment – Paynes Grey!
If I were to redo this palette, I would swap out my naples yellow for a better primary yellow. Although Naples is beautiful on its own and paired alongside Paynes and Perylene, it is not strong enough for mixing colours as it is too pale.
The tiny traveller has seen quite a few places on the island! Its the perfect art kit to bring to the lake when my friends and I went for a swim day. I painted some landscapes, some pretty things such as mushrooms and the moon, and my favourite – my friends dog Oliver! (He is a perfect model) My latest addition was yesterday at the Cowichan Exhibition Fairgrounds, where I painted the giant swing ride! Though my fear-of-heights self never had the courage to ride such a ride, I enjoy the beauty from down on the ground (where it is very nice and safe!)
